MOLD! - How to recognize and remediate

MOLD! - How to recognize and remediate

In the last two weeks I have encountered clients with mold issues. Mold is a major problem due to its lack of smell, it's usually hidden and hard to recognize before it's to late. Basements, crawl spaces, behind appliances that deal with water fridge, dishwasher and washing machines is where is starts and than spreads - read below to see what you can do to requonize, prevent or address and most important call North Shore Contractor Management to review all the sources and address if your home is under attack.

How do you know mold is present?

Mold is a major-league nuisance. It blackens the grout lines in your shower, discolors drywall, shows up as black spots on siding, darkens decks, and grows on and rots damp wood everywhere. Even worse, it can be bad for your health. Molds produce and release millions of spores small enough to be air-, water-, or insect-borne. They can also produce toxic agents known as mycotoxins. Spores and mycotoxins can have massive negative effects on human health. For those people who are affected by mold exposures there can be a wide variation in how they react. People at greatest risk of health effects are individuals with allergies, asthma, sinusitis, or other respiratory conditions, as well as infants and children, elderly people, and pregnant women. In addition, individuals with a weakened immune system are at risk.
Remember this -
Almost every home gets mold infestations. The trick is to stop them before they get big and harm both you and your home. In my blog post today I'll explain you how to identify mold and eliminate the small infestations as well as the big ones that have gotten out of hand.

You can easily remove minor mold with ordinary household cleaning products. But be careful disturbing big infestations can be bad for your health, particularly if you are an allergy sufferer or have a weakened immune system. Professionals are needed to eliminate areas over 32 square ft. (Full board of Sheetrock) When you discover an extensive mold problem, we recommend that you use the rigorous protective measures or more efficient consider calling in a North Shore Contractor Management to handle the problem to keep the mold from spreading throughout your house. We will identify the areas, remove the mold, protect areas that have tendency for future infestation and ascetically correct the walls if needed

CAUTION! PLEASE READ THIS PART!
A few types of mold are highly toxic. If you have an allergic reaction to mold or a heavy infestation inside your home, North Shore has professionals to analyze the types that are surface nuisance vs health impacting types

Step 2: How to identify mold

Mold is everywhere. It's a type of fungus that grows from tiny spores that float in the air. It can grow almost anywhere that spores land and find moisture and a comfortable temperature, between 40 and 100 degrees F. Typically that includes about every damp place in your home.

You can easily spot the most visible type of mold, called mildew, which begins as tiny, usually black spots but often grows into larger colonies. It's the black stuff you see in the grout lines in your shower, on damp walls, and outdoors on the surfaces of deck boards and painted siding, especially in damp and shady areas. A mildewed surface is often difficult to distinguish from a dirty one. To test for mildew, simply dab a few drops of household bleach on the blackened area. If it lightens after one to two minutes, you have mildew. If the area remains dark, you probably have dirt.

Mildew is a surface type of mold that won't damage your home's structure. But other types of mold cause rot. Probe the suspect area with a screwdriver or other sharp tool

If the wood is soft or crumbles, the fungi have taken hold and rot has begun. Structural walls have crumbled due to the mold saturating the

framing. Rarely does this happen but don't let a small issue become bigger but not having skilled eyes addressing the problem.

If you have a high concentration of mold, you may smell it. If you detect the typical musty odor, check for mold on damp carpets, damp walls, damp crawlspaces and wet wood under your floors, wet roof sheathing and other damp areas. Clean up these infestations right away before they get worse - water leaking under carpet, dogs or cats peeing in a corner of a house can allow mold to grow unnoticed leading to removal of flooring and sub- flooring. A costly project that can avoided.

Step 3: Removing large infestations requires precautions—and work!
Cut stained or musty carpet and pads into 6 x 8-ft. sections with a utility knife. Using a pump sprayer, mist the surfaces with water to control the spread of spores, and roll up the sections. Double-wrap them in 6-mil plastic and tape them with duct tape for disposal. Wear protective clothing and run an exhaust fan in the window.

You can scrub away the surface mold common to bathrooms, decks and siding in a matter of minutes with a 1-to-8 bleach/water solution. But often mold grows and spreads in places you don't notice, until you spot surface staining, feel mushy drywall or detect that musty smell.

If you have to remove mold concentrations covering more than a few square feet, where the musty odor is strong or where you find extensive water damage, we recommend that you take special precautions. You want to not only avoid contaminating the rest of the house but also protect yourself from breathing high concentrations of spores and VOCs.

Do you want to do this on your weekend? Do you want to have to put the risk of your families health in your amateur hands and back? Having North Shore Contractor Management bring in labor to professional inspect, remove and clean up an area while your out of the house at the movies and lunch. A sound construction decision but if your going to go at it alone or with a great friend please review the checklist below

 *   Wear old clothes and shoes that you can launder or throw away after the cleanup work.
 *   Wear special N-95 or P-100 respirators, in addition to goggles and gloves.
 *   Set an old box fan or a cheap new one in a window to ventilate the room while working. Throw it out when you're done cleaning, because the spores are almost impossible to clean off. Tape plywood or cardboard around the window openings so the spores can't blow back in
 *   Wrap and tape moldy carpeting in 6-mil plastic, and double-bag mold-infested debris in garbage bags for disposal.
 *   To control airborne spores, moisten moldy areas with a garden sprayer while you work
 *   Turn off your furnace and air conditioner and cover ducts and doors to contain spores.
 *   Keep your wet/dry vacuum outside when you vacuum

Moisture damage and large mold infestations go hand in hand.

If you live in a home with old leaky window where wind-driven rain frequently got into the wall and gave mold a foothold.
You have to open up the wall to get at the mold growing inside  Since you have to repair the wall anyway, don't hesitate to cut the drywall back beyond the obvious damage to find all the mold and let the wall dry out. To avoid cutting electrical wires, poke a hole through the damaged section and locate the wires first. Turn off the power to the outlets before you cut.

Our remediation contractors and carpenters/painters can make that wall good as new.

If the moisture damage has been neglected or gone unnoticed for long, you're likely to find rot. Where possible, remove and replace soft, spongy studs and wall sheathing. Where removal is difficult, treat the affected areas with a wood preservative (available at home centers), after cleaning the wood and allowing it to dry. Then double up rotted members with pressure-treated wood.

Think of all the money and time you need to invest when North Shore Contractor Management can price and address work in 24 hours.

Tips for Mold Prevention

The key to stopping most mold is to control dampness. The worst infestations usually occur in damp crawlspaces, in attics and walls where water has leaked in from the outside, and in basements with poor foundation drainage. Stopping leaks, ensuring good ventilation in attics, keeping crawlspaces dry and routing water away from the foundation are the best defenses.

Mildewcide in paint is usually effective for controlling surface mold in damp rooms like bathrooms and outside in shady areas. Many paints already have mildewcide in them. Check with your paint dealer to be sure. You can add mildewcide, although you might void the paint warranty.

Step 4: Cleanup and removal Vacuum up moldy debris with a standard wet/dry vacuum. Buy an extra length of hose and run it out the window so you can keep the vacuum outside to avoid further spore spread.

Complete the initial cleanup by vacuuming up the debris Thoroughly clean the wet/dry vac afterward by disposing of the filter and washing out the tank, hose and attachments with the bleach-and-water solution.

After scrubbing the surfaces (Photo 6), simply allow the bleach solution to continue to penetrate the surfaces and dry. Wash concrete floors with TSP, automatic dishwasher detergent or a chlorinated cleaner such as Comet.

Set out dehumidifiers and new fans to dry the now-cleaned areas for at least three days, then check them (by sight and smell) for mold. If you discover more mold, clean again with bleach.

When you're sure the mold has been eliminated, seal the wood surfaces with pigmented shellac like BIN or an oil-based primer like KILZ. Repaint cleaned wall surfaces with a regular latex paint that contains a mildewcide to help stop future mold growth. And keep in mind that if the moisture returns, mold will return.

Techniques for Cleaning Surface Mold

Surface molds grow in just about any damp location, such as the grout lines of a ceramic tiled shower. They're easy to scrub away with a mixture of 1/2 cup bleach, 1 qt. water and a little detergent. The bleach in the cleaning mixture kills the mold, and the detergent helps lift it off the surface so you can rinse it away so it won’t return as fast. You can also buy a mildew cleaner at hardware stores, paint stores and most home centers.

Even for simple cleaning, protect yourself from contact with mold and the bleach solution by wearing a long-sleeve shirt and long pants as well as plastic or rubber gloves and goggles.

If the mold doesn’t disappear after light scrubbing, reapply the cleaning mix and let it sit for a minute or two. Then lightly scrub again.

Seal the clean surfaces when they're thoroughly dry to slow future moisture penetration. Apply a grout sealer (available at tile shops and home centers) to tile joints.

CAUTION!

Don't mix ammonia or any detergent containing ammonia with bleach. The combination forms a poisonous gas.

2017 - The Year of the Vitual Assistant

2017 - The Year of the Vitual Assistant

Over the Holiday weekend and throughout the holiday season we were inundated with ads for the "virtual assistant" from ads showing a tottler being read to by a speaker, to a father requesting the sprinklers be turned on his daughter boyfriend to Alec Baldwin checking on his dry cleaning. I started wondering what product is the BEST!  So I researched the WWW (world wide web) and came up with this article breaking down all the products out and ones coming to a store near you soon. Enjoy the education

The Amazon Echo

is a really cool product: it’s a voice-controlled smarthome controller that lets you activate and manage your smarthome devices just by talking to it. In addition to that, though, it’s also a digital personal assistant that uses artificial intelligence to answer questions for you, and it serves as a wireless speaker that can fill your house with music.
When the Echo was announced, it seemed like a groundbreaking idea, but now that it’s been around for a while, there are a lot of alternatives. Many of these are still in the preorder phase, but a few have hit the market, and there are some exciting products out there. Whether you’re looking for a smarthome controller, a voice-activated personal assistant, or just a smart wireless speaker, you can find some great options in the list below.

Here are the coolest Amazon Echo Alternatives

1. ivee<http://www.helloivee.com/> ($100)
Although it’s still in the pre-order phase, the ivee smarthome controller and wireless speaker definitely looks to be one of the best options out there. It connects to a wide variety of smarthome devices<http://beebom.com/2015/12/smart-home-products-devices>, including Nest, Hue, SmartThings, WeMo, Iris, Wink, and Logitech. It can also connect with Spotify to play music via voice command, and it will soon be able to call you an Uber, make dinner reservations, and order takeout food. With a 15-foot “hearing” radius, you don’t need to be right next to ivee to get her to work, and the smartphone app lets you take control from even further away.

2.Cubic<https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/cubic-your-personal-ai-with-personality--2#/>
Another device that hasn’t hit the market yet is Cubic; its pre-release reviews have been fairly positive, though, and Cubic Robotics, the company behind the system, has shown some pretty cool capabilities. For example, the home-based device can look up TV show schedules, order food, answer questions, and control your smarthome devices. The mobile app can help you get directions, control your home devices from afar, remind you where you parked, and keep track of your exercise. As far as digital personal assistants go, Cubic is certainly one of the most versatile. I’m definitely looking forward to getting my hands on one of these!

3. Athom Homey<http://www.athom.com/
The Homey’s open platform makes it one of the most customizable smarthome controllers out there—and the fact that it can communicate via wifi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Z-Wave, infrared, and NFC makes it even more so. By using seven different radios, the Homey communicates with all of the devices in your house, and its natural language processing abilities let you speak normally to control them. The app also lets you exercise your control when you’re away from home, and will help you monitor thermostats, cameras, and locks from afar.

4. Amazon Tap ($129.99 and Echo Dot ($89.99

If you want a more affordable or compact alternative to Amazon Echo, the company itself offers a couple of variants in Amazon Tap and Echo Dot. Talking about the Amazon Tap first, the device is a little smaller when compared to Echo but its wireless design makes it a stand out against Echo. The smart home speaker can be taken anywhere with you and Amazon claims the battery can play 9 hours of music and stay 3 weeks on standby. While it lacks the “Alexa” hotword trigger, you can talk to it by pressing a button, which bodes well if you are wary of devices listening to you all the time. Another unique feature is the device’s ability to stream music from your phone via Bluetooth. Other than that, the device is identical to Echo, with the same Alexa features.

Coming to Echo Dot, which is a way more affordable and compact version of Echo. The difference between Echo and Echo Dot is the fact that Echo Dot does not feature the high-quality speakers and instead packs basic speakers, which work just fine to listen to Alexa. Unlike Echo, Echo Dot also packs in a 3.5 mm jack along with support for Bluetooth, so that you can play music with the device over your external premium speakers. Like Tap, Echo Dot comes with all the Alexa features and unlike Tap, it supports the hands-free “Alexa” hotword. However, the Echo Dot is only available to be ordered by Amazon Prime members through Alexa Voice Shopping, which means devices like Echo & Tap.

5.CastleHub<http://www.castleos.com/castlehub.aspx> ($499)

CastleOS is a smarthome-focused operating system that works with many existing smarthome devices, including big names like Nest, Insteon, Sonos, WeMo, Hue, GE, Ecobee, Kwikset, Yale, and Enerwave. The team behind CastleOS created the CastleHub to take advantage of the power of the operating system to run your entire house with voice commands. The Hub packs Windows 10, a 30GB SSD, 802.11ac wifi, gigabit ethernet, Bluetooth, seven USB ports, and a host of other great technologies. You can even run apps like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and Spotify on it. And its ability to work with Microsoft Kinect means you can use a multi-microphone setup to take advantage of voice control throughout your entire house!

6. Mycroft<https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/aiforeveryone/mycroft-an-open-source-artificial-intelligence-for
In a space that’s quickly becoming crowded, Mycroft sets itself apart from other smarthome voice controllers by basing its hardware on the Raspberry Pi and Arduino single-board computers. And because of the huge community based around both of these computers, it’s safe to say that Mycroft will likely be very popular and highly customized by a lot of at-home hackers. Like the other controllers, Mycroft controls all of your smarthome devices, but it also allows you to control a few other things that the alternatives don’t, like posting to social media, specifying where your music is played, controlling a Roomba, and even firing up a 3D printer.

7. Google Home<https://home.google.com/

The recently announced Google Home smart home device aka speaker is aimed to take on the Amazon Echo, which is a fact even Google acknowledged at the launch event. While Google did not give out many details around Home like its price, availability, technical specs etc., we did get a good idea as to what to expect from it when it arrives.

When it comes to the looks, you might find Home better looking when compared to Echo. The more rounded design of Home looks great and the four LEDs on top do add an extra zing. Moreover, it features interchangeable base covers, if you are looking to add color to your device.

On the functionality front, the device will come with the brand new Google Assistant<http://beebom.com/google-io-2016-events-important-announcements/>, which you can trigger through the usual “Ok Google” or “Hey Google” hotword. It will be using Google’s vast Search data and Google Now experience, so we can expect great results. Similar to Echo, you will be able to play music, control home devices, read weather info and news with Google Home. However, Home will also let you cast content to your TV, book an Uber and more. Overall, things are going to get tough for Echo when Google Home launches.

8. HAL<https://www.automatedliving.com/HALdefaultNew.aspx> ($0–500)

The Home Automated Living (HAL) system is unique in this list in that it doesn’t have a hardware component: it runs solely from your computer. After installing the HAL software, you can use voice control to interact with your smarthome devices, including lights, thermostats, appliances, sensors, and security devices. There’s also a web-based interface that you can use when you’re away from home, and you can even activate the software with a phone call! (Which is great for when you’re in your car and can’t use a complicated app.) HAL also has the huge benefit of having a free basic version, though the $250 “enthusiast” version, and $500 “techie” version, pack increasingly more control possibilities.

9. Apple HomeKit and Siri
Apple’s HomeKit technology allows you to easily control compatible devices with your iPhone, making your phone the unifying factor that makes your smarthome devices work together. And while the list of compatible devices<https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204903> isn’t huge, it does contain some of the big names in the business. One of the best things about HomeKit is that it lets you use Siri’s voice commands to control those devices, from lights to locks to smart bridges and CO2 detectors. Although HomeKit doesn’t have nearly the wide-ranging compatibility of some of the other devices on this list, it does have the advantage of being able to run right from your iPhone, with no expensive hub to coordinate your devices and receive voice commands.

10. Sonos Play:1<http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EWCUK1Q/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00EWCUK1Q&linkCode=as2&tag=beebom-20&linkId=TSSLYFMPGLNZBSOZ> ($195)

A new client - same ole Story

A new client - same ole Story

A True Story and a new client

My friend (Frank) from High School hired a friends dad (Stan) to renovate his basement - not a small project by anyone's standards. A complete rip out and redo. Frank has known Stan since we were in kindergarten. How much more trusting can a relationship be, known each other since the early 80's.

Stan comes over, tells Frank to buy all these items and then Stan takes money up front and starts his work. He rips out the walls, runs some new data lines for the TV's and computers, he installs some plumbing and than he disappears. No phone calls, no returned text messages, no emails - just pocket the money and split!

So now Frank has a basement that is 20% into construction, he has to find new contractors to complete all the plumbing, electrical, HVAC and misc carpentry work that Frank has designed in his visionary head.

Frank has no plans, he has boxes full of fixtures and trim pieces, he has to take a friends dad to small claims court (Yes, Stan still lives in the same house) so he was served legal papers, he has to find a new Contractor, he has to explain his vision to a new Contractor, he has to wait another month to start the project again, the contractor he has hired doesn't do electric so he needs to find a new Electrican.

Frank needs to do all these things while working a very stressful and demanding job, his wife has two kids to take

Frank is a very smart guy, Frank is also very trusting and Frank has enlisted the help of North Shore Contractor Management to make sure that his basement gets finished the way he envisions it, he doesn't want to give money away, he wants to make sure the job is done correctly, he needs to understand how to tie the finishes together, he needs to make sure all the electrical devices work and work together.

To be Frank don't get Stan'd and contact North Shore Contractor Management today before any work starts in your home.

Happy New Year - Top 10 Homeowner Resolutions

Happy New Year - Top 10 Homeowner Resolutions

For all clients and friends North Shore Contractor Management likes to make life easier with useful information to be shared throughout the year. Being its the New Year let's start with homeowner resolutions

We all make promises we hope to keep during the upcoming year

From the usual getting in better shape to staying organized to my all time favorite being more fiscally responsible.

Well we all should make resolutions to our homes - the most important purchase in life and the most costly to maintain. You think your gym membership is expensive try replacing that AC system or that busted pipe that just flooded your basement

In order to keep promises to yourself you must be motivated and convinced that it is possible.

The first of the year club should be checking these items off.

1. Test your garage door opener monthly to ensure that it reverses when it hits an obstruction or when its sensor beam is interrupted - we all throw so many things into the garage, batteries need replacing, check your garage bottom for "critter" holes and always always make sure all liquids are capped and items that can freeze be away from the garage door and closet to the inside of the house.

2. Vacuum the clothes dryer's exhaust duct at least once a year. If the duct is plastic, replace it (it's a fire hazard). Rigid sheet-metal ducting is best. Just take your extended hose and suck all that lint out and then empty the bag. Makes the dryer work better as well drying clothes quicker and using less energy

3. Replace furnace filters quarterly, or as recommended by the furnace manufacturer - check the size before running to your local hardware store and keep it simple. Smells and triple filters can waste your money or suffocate your system. If you have other HVAC questions please contract me for a walk through

4. Test all GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlets monthly. Press the test button and use a voltage tester to make sure the power goes off.

5. Clean leaves and debris from the condenser of a central air conditioner seasonally, it's still nice out get that blower and quick hit around the base. Check to see around your entire exterior. Nothing worse than a hole in your foundation to allow unwanted things in.

6. Once a year, vacuum the refrigerator coils underneath the appliance, same goes for dishwasher and hot water heaters/boilers. it's sanitary, keeps bugs away, keeps the air flow clear and that's where ants and critters sense food first

7. Have the fireplace chimney inspected and cleaned annually - call around and see who is offering a deal right now (also read my blog about fireplaces)

8. Inspect window and door caulking and weather stripping yearly - this should be done in the fall not winter but better late than never and if you want a painter to do it call me for recommendations

9. Replace the batteries in smoke detectors yearly. Same goes for flash lights and even remotes. Please remember, even recent hard-wired smoke detectors have backup batteries that must be replaced. If you have never checked yours, do so.

10. Set your thermostat - when your sleeping set the temp 3 to 4 degrees lower and set it for about 60 minutes prior to wake up to be back to normal temperature you want your house at. This saves some money and you'll sleep cozier.

All these items can be done by North Shore Contractor Management with a scheduled appointment and if you have other questions or concerns please call me at 6318384362 or email us at info@northshorecontractormanagement.com

A yearly friend for seasonal questions - Happy New Year

Don't get SCREWED - Get DRILLED

Don't get SCREWED - Get DRILLED

Gone are the days of cords and drill chucks from

Your fathers tool box - now onto battery power and multi settings.

Ditching your drill’s power cord means greater freedom and mobility. Untethered from the wall, there’s no limit to how far you can travel, drill in hand. In addition, you don’t have to worry about tangling the line around step stools, ladders, or your own arms and legs. And the tool kits meant to pair with them provide a host of add-ons that share the same body and battery, saving both money and space vs. buying a host of additional standalone tools.

But even high-priced, heavy-duty cordless tools can lack performance.  It's not necessary to pay extra for lithium-ion batteries, even though their lighter weight and longer run time helps—and they’re by far the most popular type now.

As a construction superintendent I see multiple tradesmen and tradeswomen have their "weapon" of choice. From the carpenter to the Electrican to the HVAC mechanic and finally the appliance installers. Why do they choose that tool? What was the best drill they ever had? What was the worst drill they ever had? Warranties, battery life, interchangeable batteries and strength all come into this equation

Putting the Screws to Cordless Drills

Choose a Battery Type - the end cap trap

Newer and lighter lithium-ion cells (Li-Ion) have helped cordless drills shed some bulk over once-predominant nickel cadmium (NiCd) types. The Li-Ion models are now the highest-rated and the top sellers overall. In addition to decreased weight, you get added power and longer run time. They're also greener because they don’t contain cadmium, a toxic metal that can leach into ground water if spent NiCd batteries are thrown into the trash instead of recycled. NiCd-powered tools do still make up some of the market, though, thanks to their lower cost and decent performance for most needs. You’ll also find a few nickel–metal hydride (NiMH) batteries out there, although they are increasingly rare. Based on this stay away from the older models.

Hold It in Your Hand - make sure it's right for you.

In addition to checking the drill's weight, check its balance by gripping it firmly and lifting it to a wall as if to drive a screw. So many brands have their own little nuances.  The drill's chuck (the top) should point straight ahead and not tilt up or down. A light should activate when you squeeze the trigger. This little feature helps to see when working in smaller places or behind cabinets.

For Kits, Check All the Tools - it's not always worth it.

They tease you with bundles. A cordless circular saw is useless unless your cutting wrapping paper.
Most cordless tool kits include a drill, reciprocating saw, and circular saw for $300 to $500. But while cordless circular saws have improved, some them and some reciprocating versions have been unimpressive and proved to be slow and ineffective, especially those in lower-priced kits. STICK WITH THE DRILL/IMPACT DRIVER - get the cord with the saw (we will review that in an upcoming blog)

Weigh the Pros and Cons of Specialized Drivers
You'll also see more Li-Ion impact drivers and small, lightweight cordless screwdrivers that weigh one pound or less. But our tests revealed some notable drawbacks with small screwdrivers.

Impact drivers add twisting power using an internal hammer that pulses the chuck and bit back and forth as it spin. This is what you want as a homeowner. Appealing as it seems a pocket-sized cordless screwdriver may be, most have been slow and shy on power. The Suck! :  NORTH SHORE CONTRACTOR ADVICE - Spend $10 or so for a good set of old-fashioned hand screwdrivers instead.

What's the Drill?

Unless you're handling strictly light-duty tasks, you're likely to be disappointed with the least expensive models of cordless drills. The same goes for tool kits.

Single drills priced under $100 make up most of the market and typically have smaller, 3/8-inch chucks, the part that holds the bits. Your Ryobi, black and decker are homeowner specials but when work needs to be done these tools are not your friend.  If you're more serious, a contractor-grade drill trades some lightness for the extended run time you'll need for decks and other large projects - your Bosch, Hilti, Dewalt heavier in hand due to bigger motors making more power.

Cordless Drills

Cordless drills are best for fast drilling and most screw-driving. NiCd-powered models can handle most jobs, but Li-Ion and NiMH tools performed best in our tests. The 18-volt drills (typical these days) weigh about twice as much as 9.6-volt models.

Cordless Impact Drivers

Gaining in popularity, the big advantage to an impact driver is that it can loosen a difficult screw without stripping the head. And the same applies when driving a screw—an impact driver won't damage the head.

Cordless Screwdrivers

Most professional cordless screwdrivers weigh about 2 pounds, and cost about $100, but for most people a cordless drill is a more versatile choice. Smaller, less expensive cordless screwdrivers weigh around 1 pound, and cost about $60. But these less expensive models are really only good for light-duty jobs because they are limmited and very slow. You can find more-capable (if larger and heavier) drills for the same money. or even less

Batteries

All but the less-expensive drills come with two batteries so you can use one while the other is charging. Craftsman, DeWalt, and Ryobi are among the brands that let you use lithium cells with some of their nickel-cadmium tools.

Several brands let you buy drills, saws, and other tools without batteries and chargers, saving you money by letting you share both among multiple tools as you would with a cordless kit.

Battery charger: A "smart" charger on many models can recharge a battery in 15 to 60 minutes, compared with three to five hours or more for conventional chargers. It also helps to extend battery life by adjusting the charge as needed. A few models can charge two batteries at once, which is handy for big projects. Most models now have a charge indicator, a meter that indicates the remaining charge. This feature is especially helpful with lithium-ion batteries, which can be damaged if you let them run down fully before recharging.

My pick - 18V Dewalt Impact Driver with extra battery.

Kitchens no longer begin and end at glossy surfaces, as we now have so many more options to consider, from timbers and stone to concrete and glass. Yes, your kitchen can be as ‘whatever’ as you want it to be!

How do you get there? FIRST! contact me ‪6318384362‬ or info@northshorecontractormanagement.com that's the first step to success. Now I'll give you some tricks to the design trade to make your unfunctional, ugly kitchen into a functional work of art.

1. Get to grips with the kitchen triangle

The concept of the kitchen work triangle is that primary tasks are carried out within the triangular space between the cooking top, sink and fridge. You don't always have to follow this rule but the use of your kitchen is based on this design concept.

We can draw these three points out and build out from there.

2.  Plan your appliances around your lifestyle

There is a machine for pretty much anything these days – and you need to decide what your goal with that new kitchen is before you splurge on the appliances of your choice.

If you’re BIG on cooking, you might want a top-of-the-range oven. Or if you’re always on the go, a self-cleaning one might be more sufficient.

3. Get clever with storage

Even the smallest of kitchens can get very clever with storage – vertical storage, appliance nooks, pantry drawers, corner drawers, lazy Susan's … there’s no more excuse for having a myriad of elements cluttering your countertops. I love these sneaky little design improvements - when you show your friends and family they will be amazed by your kitchen intuition

4. Understand the principles of lighting

How can you avoid hot spots and shadows in your oh-so perfect new kitchen? Consider the following:  Here's are some examples - HOME DEPOT WONT GO OVER THESE ITEMS LIKE NORTH SHORE CONTRACTOR MANAGEMENT WILL

• Ambient lighting will provide overall illumination for your kitchen, radiating a comfortable level of brightness.

• Task lighting will help you perform specific tasks (like food prepping) and is often used over kitchen and laundry work spaces.

• Accent lighting can be used to create visual interest in your room, like drawing attention to your backsplash, wall art, etc.

5. Don’t forget your flooring

As mentioned in my last article - Flooring, What's under your feet?

http://www.northshorecontractormanagement.com/blog/

Even though flooring can have a major impact on your kitchen renovation, it is so often an afterthought. Rather consider it at the early planning stages to avoid a budget blowout.

Remember that your choice of tiles (or wood, or linoleum, or vinyl flooring etc.) needs to fit in with your kitchen’s design style. Fortunately there are a range of flooring options available these days, so be sure to consider an option that will not only look terrific in your space, but can also withstand the test of time and foot traffic.

6. Be realistic with your budget

Design and pricing of flooring, lighting, cabinets and whatnot all need to work within your budget, this is something we do together at your home or with one of North Shores design team consultants. Getting a road map is the start of your new space.

7. Know that it’s going to get messy

This might be the biggest complaint I hear from people - setting expections of contractors and having North Shore Contractor Management oversee your projects will stop any sort of mess biuld up. A pet peeve of mine is having someone leave a mess behind.

This might sound obvious, and yet so many people are upset once that renovation starts impacting their daily schedules and lifestyles.

Think about rubbish removal, covering flooring and furniture, how you will prepare meals, how to calm down your pets who are upset with the new people trampling in and out your house, etc.

Shape up a clear plan, and your home won’t be thrown into disarray come build week.

It's the new year, it's time for that upgrade you have been talking about. Make it flawless, painless and fun

www.northshorecontractormanagement.com is the place to start 😀

EGGS-actly. Eggs making life over easy.

EGGS-actly. Eggs making life over easy.

This fall I read an article about collecting eggshells and reusing them to garden. The article touted their usefulness in the garden, for everything from fertilizer to organic pest control. This spring, I’m planning on building a garden for Mrs Siegel using crushed eggshells in the garden several ways:

How to start

How many eggs to you use during the fall and winter? All the cooking I figured over a 100 eggs easy. During the winter, I have been saving the shells from all the eggs we ate by simply rinsing them and placing them in an open container where they could dry out. (they did not smell. Everyone who comes to my house and saw them asked me this question.) After my containers are full, I will spend some time pulverizing them into little bits with wooden spoons, thus compacting the shells so that I could collect more.

Eggshell Fertilizer

Healthy plants and vegetables are easier to cultivate when tilled into the soil, ground eggshells provide your plants with calcium.

Though nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are most vital for healthy growth, calcium is also essential for building healthy “bones”—the cell walls of a plant. Composed of calcium carbonate, eggshells are an excellent way to introduce this mineral into the soil. To prep the eggshells, grind with a mixer, grinder, or mortar and pestle and till them into the soil. Because it takes several months for eggshells to break down and be absorbed by a plant’s roots, it is recommended that they be tilled into the soil in fall. More shells can be mixed into your soil in the spring.

By the same token, finely crushed shells mixed with other organic matter at the bottom of a hole will help newly planted plants thrive. (Tomatoes especially love calcium.) For an exciting recycled garden cocktail: try mixing your eggshells with coffee grounds, which are rich in nitrogen.

Finally, eggshells will reduce the acidity of your soil, and will help to aerate it.

Eggshell Seed Starters

Want to start a garden early and maybe teach your kids some small level of responsibility with education mixed in!

Egg shell garden start ups! Because egg shells are biodegradable, eggshells make excellent, no-waste seed starters. For this, reserve some of your deeper shell halves. Sterilize the shelves by boiling them or by placing them in a 200 degree oven for 30 minutes. (If you put them in a cooling oven after, say, you baked a roast chicken, you can sterilize eggs without using excess energy.)

Next, with a nail or awl, make a hole in the bottom for drainage. Add soil and seeds according to the packaging. When sprouts appear, plant them—egg and all—right into the soil. You can start whenever you want just when the plants start growing you need to transplant them to allow continued growth. Again just another level of education, responsibility, eco-friendliness and house hold costs down.

Eggshell Pest Control

Now if you live on Long Island you could very well have a deer in your yard - beautiful as they are I have heard many a story of them "EATING MY PLANTS!" A coating of crushed eggshells in the garden is said to help deter several pests, both large and small. Deer dislike the smell of the albumen and will stay away. Apparently you can also use egg’s insides to deter deer. Be aware, however, that though deer hate the smell of eggs, rodents love it. Therefore, it may not be best to use this deterrent near the house

Eggshell Bird Food

Like plants and people, birds also benefit from a bit a calcium in their diet, especially the females who need extra before and after laying their eggs. To make bird food, start by sterilizing the shells by leaving them in a cooling oven after you bake a meal. Then crush them into fine bits and mix with your favorite seed.

Kitchens of the Future - can be in your home tomorrow

Kitchens of the Future - can be in your home tomorrow

It's amazing how far technology and appliances have come. From simple things like a Keurig which was the hottest thing on the market 5 years ago, but 10 years ago was just a dream. Remember your first microwave. That giant box that sat on your kitchen counter was a god send for your parents. Now there are more kitchen gadgets than you have space for in your kitchen.

The holidays are here and you can ask Santa for some many things, you can call North Shore Contractor Management to help with almost anything.

Heres the link to the future. Enjoy your domestic browsing - George and Judy Jetson is not far away.

The 5 W's of Construction Projects

The 5 W's of Construction Projects

If you wanted to build a new house (assuming you know what to do with a power saw and nail gun...), would you start cutting lumber and pouring cement without:

  • A blueprint?
  • Ordering the proper supplies?
  • Putting together a game plan of what needed to be done in which sequence?
  • Knowing your budget?
  • Figuring out if the land you were building on could support the structure?

...and about a dozen other factors?

Of course not!

Who?

North Shore Contractor Management

The questions and answers is what we do with our clients and the subcontractors we hire. Making sure all topics are covered. We don't figure out WHAT we're trying to accomplish and WHY before we jump in and start before we have a clear plan.

Thinking about the old 5 W's makes a task thought out and easier implemented

What?

What is getting built? What is the most important change you want to make in your home or yard, what is the most needed change? Make a list of wants vs needs. While sitting on the couch or waiting for dinner to cook its an easy thing to do with your family to create discussions about the future.

Where?

Where to begin! Well that's an easy one with me! info@northshorecontractormanagement orwww.northshorecontractormanagement.com

Like a therapist I can get to the route of your needs and wants by just sitting and talking.

Maybe what you need is just a bigger or more organized closet to make your day start easier, maybe that backyard will be your retreat to unwind after the commute to the city. Start with Stu and things will fall into place there after.

Why?

When I'm working with my clients and subcontractors I always start by asking them to define their plan -- their "why."?

Take a few minutes and think about WHY you want a new kitchen for example?

Is it efficient? Is the layout balanced? Do you have enough space? Why do you want that appliance? What is the most important thing you want to change? Who can take care of the work? Where can you find that countertop?

North Shore Contractor Management incorporates life's lessons with construction sequences walking you through things so you understand everything that is going on around you.

How?

How can it be so easy? How can you afford these things? How can it be done on time? How can you trust the contractors from Craigslist and the penny saver? How does that fixture match the countertop, how can I install a steam shower and remove my bathtub?

Call and find out!

How to Design to say ME!!!

How to Design to say ME!!!

How to make something say ITS ME!!!!

When designing a room or a landscape you want it to display your personality, your look, your life needs.
How do you do this? Have you ever wondered how an architect comes up with an award-winning building design or a musician creates that hit song? Creativity is at the heart of all design and seeking the inspiration to boost that creativity can sometimes be a challenge. In some ways, we are all design professionals. So you don't get paid to do this professionally You don’t have to design an automobile, write a novel, or sculpt a gorgeous sculpture to be a design professional. Everyday we all embark on tasks that require us to think, dream, collaborate in our head with our own voices, and get inspired to be creative in everyday life. Whether you are a design professional as a living or you just enjoy boosting your creativity juices, here are a few tips to consider.

- Find a new place to let your mind wander
For many architects, interior designers, artist the ability to find a new place to seek creativity can often be a challenge. Whether it’s because you are only used to your old ways or you can’t think of new ones- creativity is stifled when it’s not allowed to be stimulated. Open up your curtains in your home and stare out into the world and go explore somewhere you’ve never been. If you can’t leave your home – surf the internet, read a magazine or book that someone said inspired them or try a different route to work for a few days and see what sparks fly.

- Boost creativity amongst the outdoors
Whether animate or inanimate objects inspire you, nature has the entire spectrum wrapped up into an ever-changing landscape. Visit your local park, walk around your outdoor home and try bringing a camera with you. Some of the greatest design origins come from capturing nature on film. Living on the North Shore of Long Island gives so many possibilities just pick a town and explore.

- Make your favorite spot have a new purpose
If you are a designer and are in a rut for finding creativity, take a look at your favorite spot to sit and read or your it is a painting studio, a woodworking bench out in the garage or if you’re a chef and it’s your kitchen – how inspiring is it to work in? Surround your workspace with images of goals you want to accomplish, fill your bookshelves with books you are dying to read! Sometimes the creativity needs to be pulled or pried from your soul. Some people are therapist for your head, North Shore Contractor Management has the knack to bring your heart and soul to your surroundings. Your immediate workspace is a reflection of your mind; make it magical and full of wonder with colors, patterns and textures to inspire more of your senses.

- Go on vacation for enjoyment not just for work
When is the last time you enjoyed a vacation because of the pure joy of leaving your normal life and exploring a new city or destination? Designers who are inspired can seek more ideas when traveling. New cultures, people, geography, music, food and more all are catalysts to your imagination. Instead of holding off on that cruise around the world, pack up the car and go drive for a few hours and see what happens!

- Document your ideas when the mood strikes
Instead of going through your days having inspired thought but then forgetting them once you get back to your craft – remember to document your life experiences. Whether through a creative look book or collaborative board like Pinterest or even Evernote or by taking photos, you will be surprised how many ideas are lost throughout the day, which turn into missed opportunities to use your creative ambition on your everyday work world. Try bringing in positive vibes into your workspace with your personel touches, with today's technology at your finger tips your favorite color can be captured, the bench you love can be reproduced and your ideas can become reality.

- Allow yourself and your work to have a sense of humor
Somewhere along the path of life adults became serious people who forgot how to have a sense of humor, especially in the work world. Creativity isn’t always about discipline, in fact letting your mind forget “the rules” may help you spark creative design ideas, new lyrics to a song, creative new fashion trends or architectural elements that you may have never thought of. Assess your work lifestyle, your home interiors and office and any place where it could use some more whimsy.

- Practice getting inspired by visually dissecting a single element
Another way to let your mind find creative thought is by choosing a single element such as a vintage clock or a bright colored chair and make that your center point or the Sun of your room. Everything gets designed around that piece of furniture.

- Don’t allow yourself to get “bullied” into the social norm
This is my biggest pet peeve. You know those voices in your head that say “Why are you designing this way?” Creativity shouldn’t have a limit and often we as people let ourselves get bullied around by our own sub-conscience and feel we have to adhere to the status quo. Instead give yourself permission to be different and to seek creativity in any outlet that feels right for you! Do not go to Target, Pier 1, or Marshalls. Go to your local antique shop, your local consignment store, the Thrift shop or weekend Flea Market or Garage sale. Eclectic things make my heart sing

Let's TALK about CAULK

Let's TALK about CAULK

Continuing to maintain your house is a never ending process, today NORTH SHORE CONTRACTOR MANAGEMENT will show you how to caulk your tub or shower. Having kids or dogs or a sloppy spouse they throw, shake or drip water all over your bathroom floors and walls while in and out of the shower or tub.  Bathroom renovations get much more costly when water damage is discovered due to water getting behind your walls. How long has that caulk looked like an elderly persons hands all cracked with splits and shrinkage allowing beads of water to get into your walls and floors causing mold, structural rotting or just plan surface damage .
You've seen the ominous signs of aging caulk. First it was the brown or yellow tinge along the edges. Now its smooth and supple skin has turned brittle and cracked, opening the way for stubborn colonies of mildew to take hold, or for water to seep through and turn wallboard and framing mushy. Whether it's around your sink, between a tub and its tile surround, or covering the joints of your shower stall - it has got to go. This is your first and best layer of defense and it's been penetrated!

Fortunately, caulk is cheap, and applying it isn't difficult. All you need is an hour, a few common tools, and materials easily found at any hardware store. But as easy as it is, you still have to do it right, or you'll be caulking again next year. Any expert tile installer or plumber will tell you - "The key is to completely remove the old caulk, including the residue you can't see. Start with a fresh with a clean, smooth, dry surface."
Follow North Shore Contractor Management steps below and you should three to five years of safe sealing

How do you know what to Buy?!
So many products and such little patience for Home Depot
The best caulks for tubs, sinks, or shower stalls come in tubes labeled “Tub and Tile” or “Kitchen and Bath.” These are either acrylic latex or silicone compounds that have been chemically tweaked to resist mildew and to stick to smooth, nonporous surfaces.
But they have distinctly different personalities - pay attention
(A) Silicone: Tenacious, waterproof, and very flexible, this type of caulk is also finicky about surface conditions, difficult to smooth, requires mineral spirits for cleanup, and emits a nose-wrinkling odor until cured. It leaves a residue that's hard for anything - including new silicone - to stick to. That's why formerly siliconed surfaces should be scrubbed with an abrasive pad soaked in mineral spirits. Silicone caulk has a color palette limited to clear, white, and almond.
(B) Acrylic Latex: Compared with silicone, this kind of caulk is much more forgiving about the type and cleanliness of a surface it's applied to. Smoothing it is easy, it cleans up with water, and it doesn't have much if any smell. While it does shrink more and dry harder than silicone - and will probably need to be replaced a little sooner - the replacement job should go faster. Acrylic latex caulk comes in a rainbow assortment of colors to match sink and tub glazes.

Remove Existing Caulk

For this job, North Shore Contractor Management sliced away the old acrylic latex caulk with quick, sharp strokes of a 5-in-1 painter's tool and a razor scraper. This is a great tool for any homeowners. You can also use a utility knife but you can scratch fixtures, and if not careful cut yourself - always work away from your body (push don't pull)
Note: Metal blades can scratch plastic sinks, tubs, and surrounds; use a plastic razor blade instead. Caulk removers also harm plastic.)

Next- A dry, nonabrasive pad scours away every trace of caulk residue. (Clean up after silicone with a pad soaked in mineral spirits. But to avoid scratching plastic fixtures, use a soft rag dampened with mineral spirits, not a scouring pad.) Wipe a damp cotton rag over the joint to remove the caulk dust and prepare the surface for the new caulk. Thoroughly dry the area with paper towels, a dry rag, or a hair dryer. Prep all these items ahead of time to make sure your organized and ready
Also make sure your not allergic to any chemicals used and always where gloves to stay neat and clean

Tape and Caulk

Lay parallel strips of blue painter's tape, about 3⁄8 inch apart, to keep the bead straight, uniform, and off surfaces where it shouldn't be.
Point the nozzle hole toward the joint; hold the gun equidistant from the surfaces on either side of the joint and about 45 degrees out from it.
Your caulk gun should have a nozzle cutter and a metal prong to puncture and release the caulk. Once the caulk tube is installed apply steady pressure to the trigger as you move the gun smoothly along the entire length of the seam. Whether you push or pull the gun is a matter of personal preference. Either way, keep the caulk gun moving at a steady speed matched to the rate that caulk is flowing out of the nozzle. Too fast, and the bead will be too thin, with bubbles or breaks in the seal; too slow, and you'll waste material and spend more time cleaning up.
Tip: Trim the nozzle at a 45-degree angle near the tip. The hole in the nozzle should be just big enough to fill the joint, roughly 3⁄16 inch.

Smooth
As soon as the seams are filled, dampen a lint-free rag or paper towel and press it into the joint with your finger. Pull it along the joint in one continuous motion to shape the fresh caulk into a concave bead. Immediately remove the tape, one strip at a time, taking care not to let it touch any of the fresh caulk. Then go back and smooth the bead again to eliminate the tiny ridges left by the tape. Wait at least 24 hours for the caulk to cure before using the shower or bath.

Now add this item to your winter to do list, if you see or think you see some areas of concern call me or contact info@northshorecontractormanagement.com to make an appointment

Wall Collage - your personal museum display

Wall Collage - your personal museum display

PHOTO COLLAGES - PERSONAL MUSEUM IN YOUR HOME

One thing I did after I got married was take all the special pictures, photos and artwork that people gave and we created and make a collage wall to display in our living room. This makes one wall a focus and gives constant reminders of the love that is shared with us.

North Shore Contractor Management can layout and install a collage wall without the fear of unneeded holes in the walls, placing the different shapes and sizes in an planned way making it look sparatic but really organized chaos making eyes dance to the wonderful display.

Picture collages are a fun way to decorate a large wall space. In a collage, you don’t have to pick just one picture, instead you get to pick a bunch of your favorites to show off all at once. The thing is, if they aren’t done correctly, picture collages can look chaotic and messy on a wall. Once you learn these tips on how to hang a picture collage, you can be confident that your picture collage will make your walls look amazing..

Picture Collage Tip #1: Pick Your Wall

The first step in learning how to hang a picture collage is choosing your wall. The wall, and even the room, where the collage lives in makes all the difference in how the picture collage will fit into your space. Pick a room for your collage that is open and bright. You want there to be lots of space that people can stand back and enjoy the collage, as well as the ability to come up close and look at each individual photo.

It’s for this reason that I don’t recommend putting picture collages in hallways or in enclosed stairwells. When there is another wall 4 feet away from the collage, the only view of the collage you get is a close-up of the individual pictures. That way, you'll miss out on the larger view of the collage itself. Give your picture collage adequate space to breathe by putting it in an actual room.

To pick a wall for your picture collage, look for a space that is between 6 and 8 feet wide. This will give you enough space to get frames of varying sizes to fit without them feeling squished. If you are looking to fill a space over a couch, consider using large images that your guests can enjoy from afar the smallest is 5x7 frames and I never go larger than double that.

And by plan, I mean to literally measure and draw it out on paper. If you are the super detailed type, you can draw every frame perfectly to scale, but it’s not completely necessary. The main goal of drawing this out is to start to get an idea of how many, and which size frames you want to have in your collage. As long as the boxes you draw as frames are somewhat proportional to the wall space, you can start to get a count for how many frames you need for your project. Layout with thin blue painters tape lets you get a feeling of spacing and height. Remember people don't have a ladder to get up and look at a photo.

Picture Collage Tip #2: Picking Frames

When creating a picture collage, the thing to remember is that you don’t need every frame to be the same. That being said, a picture collage can look pretty darn cool if you have identical frames with similar pictures in them, but this is best for pictures of nature, not people. If you want to make a perfectly symmetrical picture collage with identical frames, consider using photographs, yours or purchased ones, that are of a single item from nature, like a flower or tree. When each picture has one focal point, it will allow your guests' eyes to focus on the order and symmetry of the display.

If you want to create a picture collage depicting people, I would suggest choosing frames that are artistic, eclectic and original. They could be the same color with different thicknesses to the frames, shadow boxes, wood, metal or plastic.  There really is no wrong answer you could pick ones that are different colors, but have a similar theme, like varying shades of a single color.

This wall is an extension of you and your home.

The goal is to make the frames appear like they are one piece of art, so consistency and similarity in the frames is your first step to achieving a cohesive look. I would also suggest buying a few extra frames just in case you want to rearrange a few things from your original plan. A picture collage can look one way on paper, but once you get the frames arranged, you may find that you want it to look a little different on the wall.

Picture Collage Tip #3: Arrange the Frames on the Floor

Once you have the frames, now is the time to start playing around with their arrangement. On the floor directly below the wall where you want to hang them, start arranging the frames how you think you want them to hang. If you do this on the floor below the wall, it will help keep your arrangement in the space confines of the wall. Here you can play around, moving pieces of your collage puzzle until you get the right arrangement for your space. Once you have it perfected, you can move on to the tricky part of getting it to stay the same when you hang it on the wall.

Picture Collage Tip #4: Use Thin painters tape to Plot Your Picture Collage and color copies.

Getting your perfectly arranged picture collage from the floor to the wall is the trickiest part of the entire process. This next step may seem like an extra, unnecessary step, but it will help to keep you from making simple errors when putting up your collage.

Cut craft paper or painters tape in the exact size of each frame. Also color copies of the photos or artwork are placed on each piece of paper where the hangers for each frame are by poking a hole with a pushpin. This will show you where your nail or picture hanger needs to go. Then, once all your paper squares are ready, start arranging them with removable tape onto the wall using your model on the floor as reference. Once you have all the squares up on the wall, you can see if any are crooked, off-center, or out of line. Adjust the layout pieces until they are exactly how you want them.

Once your temporary frames are exactly how you want them, it’s time to put the nails in the wall. (Insert scary music) Using the small holes that you created in the paper, put a nail into the wall where the picture will be hung. When you do this correctly, you will have a perfectly placed nail that will hang a level, perfectly placed picture in your collage. Continue to do with each of the paper frames until all the nails are installed.

Now that you have followed these steps, the only thing left to do is put the pictures in each frame, hang each frame on the appropriate nails, and enjoy your brand new picture collage.

Well I did and I loved every minute of planning, designing, pricing, scheduling, hiring, building and smiling when finished.

Thinking Ahead.....what is your spring fling?

Thinking Ahead.....what is your spring fling?

It's 30 degrees outside, your making your holiday gift list, your looking at all those appliances, home accessories and shiny new gadgets to buy for loved ones. Well what about YOU!?

Maybe you want a new kitchen, a new paint job, the backyard recreated? I know it's early but 4 to 5 months from now the flowers will appear, the sweaters will be gone and it's time for change.

Thinking about adding, renovating or expanding a room, think about how the space will be used and how the changes will affect traffic patterns. Also consider how new construction will affect the overall context of your home. An oversized addition may overwhelm your house or crowd a small lot.

2. Learn From Others

One of the best ways to get inspiration and to avoid pitfalls is to follow the experiences of other homeowners, something that North Shore Contractor Management can do in one sitting. Explaining what the positives and negatives of construction work on your home will bring - to know what your in for makes the medicine go down easier.

3. Think Ahead

Although you may dream of having a spacious new addition, the project may not make sense if you plan to sell your house in a few years. A bathroom renovation might be the only thing you need to make your house more desirable. Talking to North Shore Contractor Management gives you the entire picture. What costs are, benefits of construction vs re-sale, maybe talking about one idea will lead to another.

4. Count Your Money

Even the best-laid budgets can go bust. Chances are, your remodeling project will cost more than you expect. Before you set your heart on high-end ceramic tile, find out how much you have to spend and make sure you have a cushion against cost overruns. For must-have items that could wipe out your savings account, explore home improvement loans and other financing options. If you own your home, an equity loan is an option - North Shore Contractor Management can put you in touch with lenders that are friends not loan sharks that put you into a financial bind. but you should know your comfort level and understand what you're getting into - this is just another layer of personal care North Shore Contractor Management offers our clients.

5. Choose your team - with ME!

Unless you plan to take on the entire by yourself, you'll need to hire helpers or just North Shore Contractor Management to bring everything in a nice package to you. Naturally, you'll want to make sure that the folks who work for you are qualified, licensed, and properly insured. Something that North Shore vents out for you. But, If you have an older house, hire someone who knows the time period when your house was built; putting a finger on historical appropriateness is an undervalued skill. 6. Negotiate a Contract

Do you know how to? Do you really know the verbiage to hold someone responsable for their work? What happens if something goes wrong? Who do you turn too.

Whether you plan a simple carpentry job or a major project requiring the services of an architect and a general contractor, misunderstandings can lead to disaster. Do not begin remodeling without a written contract. Make sure everyone agrees on the work that will be completed and how long it will take. Also be clear on the types of materials that will—and will not—be used.

7. Get Permissions

In most parts of the world, a legal permit is required before you make structural changes to your home. The building permit assures that the remodeling project meets local building codes and safety regulations. If you live in a historic district like Northport or Huntington Village the permit also assures that exterior changes to your home are in keeping with neighborhood guidelines. General contractors will usually take care of the paperwork, but small-time workers may not... and the permits become your responsibility. I offer all this plus warranty management

8. Plan for Problems - Make Ground Rules

The larger the remodel job, the greater the chances are for frustrations. There will be equipment breakdowns, supply shortages, miscommunications, and delays. Draw up a few friendly rules for workers—tell them where they may park their trucks and store their equipment overnight. If concrete is involved, know where the leftover will be dumped. And, don't expect contractors to take care of your pets—the family dog and cat may be happier at a relative's summer camp. Also, take care of you and your family. Plan for ways you can indulge yourself when times become especially stressful. Schedule a day at a spa and reserve a night at a romantic bed and breakfast inn. You deserve it!

Can you imagine doing all the above and having a full time job? Making calls, planning, dealing with headaches with multiple subcontractors that you don't know anything about expect their ad in the pennysaver or that he came to your house in a new truck?

Many people have good reasons to make a change—life events (does someone now use a walker or wheelchair?), different circumstances (are the parents about to move in?), or preparation for the future (shouldn't we install a home elevator now, before we need it?). Some people just like change, and that's okay, too. The first step in any home remodeling, though, is to take a step back into self-reflection. Know why you're doing something before you make the plan how to do it. You might save yourself a bunch of money—and a relationship.

Good luck! You'll need it

PAINTING - Its not just like Danielson working for Mr Miagi

PAINTING - Its not just like Danielson working for Mr Miagi

Homeowners will take a crack at doing some house painting at some point and many will end up with more headaches than they need while doing it.  North Shore Contractor Management encourages home owners to hire The Professionals but I have learned a few tricks from painting hundreds of rooms and I’m here to share my 20 years of experience with you to make your house painting experience not as painful but remember your an amateur doing a professionals job. It's not as easy as it looks and the amount of material you need to buy saves you 20 to 30% per 1000 dollars spent, but is your time worth that savings?  You have been NSCM advised 😉 PLEASE READ EVERYTHING BELOW FOR A CLEARER PICTURE OF PAINTING FOR YOURSELF

  1. Clear the Room.

It may seem easy to cut corners and paint around a bunch of stuff in a room but this is one of the easiest place to add unneeded hassle. Take the extra time and effort to move everything out a room before starting and you will likely be thankful for it later. Anyone who has painted a significant amount of rooms has probably learned the hard way that moving the furniture out would have been the best option. If there are pieces of furniture that are simply too large to move out, make sure to cover them properly and move them to the center of the room to prevent the chance of getting paint on them accidentally.

NORTH SHORE WILL NEGOTIATE THE PAINTERS TO MOVE FURNITURE SO YOU DON'T HAVE TOO.  WE WILL NEGOTIATE WITH THE PAINTER THINGS YOU NEVER REALIZED YOU COULD GET.

- Spackle touch ups

- Removed and reinstalled curtains

- other rooms thrown in if the job is large enough

2. Protection is Key.

Preparation can make all the difference and covering all surfaces you want clear of paint won’t be time wasted, real painting contractors know that. Utilizing drop cloths on the floors and furniture will help keep errant paint from getting on these surfaces - kicked over paint cans on hard wood floors is a common amateur and give you peace of mind while you’re working. Make sure to cover all the little things that many people forget like doorknobs and hardware. Removing sockets and light switch covers will also help ensure all the details of your paint job come out right

  1. Buckets Not Paint Trays.

Using a bucket instead of a paint tray is one of those pro tips that seem small but make a huge difference in the long run. A bucket allows you to mix more paint and ensure that you have a consistent color on the finished product. Using a bucket also make the paint more mobile so that you can move around the room effectively and not spill paint when moving. There is a tool called a painter’s screen that you can put in the bucket and keep your roller clear of extra paint. Remember what I said in the beginning all these accessories add up.

NORTH SHORE CONTRACTOR MANAGEMENT CAN FIGURE ALL THESE COSTS AHEAD OF TIME JUST TO SHOW YOU THE DELTA IN SAVINGS. ONE PHONE CALL TO ALLOW NSCM TO FIGURE WHAT THE JOB SHOULD COST VS WHAT IT WILL COST VS WHAT DOING IT YOURSELF VS WHAT NORTH SHORE CONTRACTOR MANAGEMENT WILL SAVE YOU IN TIME, MONEY AND AGGRAVATION

  1. Paint Top to Bottom

Once the baseboards and ceiling (got a big enough ladder) is out of the way and you are ready to bust out your paint roller, remember to roll the paint top to bottom. This lets the roller pick up any drips as you move down the wall and keeps the paint looking clean and smooth as you go. - those drips are such eye sores always notorious when work is done by amateurs

  1. Keep a Wet Edge While Rolling

A big part of proper rolling is keeping a wet edge as you move across the wall. What this does is help the paint dry at a similar speed and in turn give a more even finish. If some of the paint dries before the next roll, this can create lap marks and really stand out as a flaw when all is said and done.

Every homeowner should feel empowered to tackle projects in their home and painting is one where many can find success and build confidence. Using these tips and others will go a long way to helping you avoid rookie mistakes and get that perfect paint job the first time

BUT REMEMBER YOUR A ROOKIE! Also where are you storing all these accessories, how often are you going to repaint, developing relationships with contractors gets better pricing later on.

Call me and let's walk though, the money spent on NSCM is well worth it.

ICE - its only good to keep your drink cold

ICE - its only good to keep your drink cold

North Shore Contractor Management cares about our customers and if you see the forecast for next week - WINTER IS HERE AND IS NOT LEAVING

Not only is the bitter cold painful to deal with and have us all wishing for summer, but it can be dangerous as well. Not many realize how the drastic dip in temperature can become hazardous, and is important to take seriously. Make sure to take precautionary measures when the temperature drops as low as it has today on Long Island. As a competent construction consultant we like to share information and look to assist with winter protection of your home.

Remember pipes bursting is the most common insurance claim when winter is upon us. North Shore Contractor Management also represents homeowners when dealing with insurance adjusters

There are a couple of different things to keep in mind when the winter cold sets in, and temps drop below freezing. Your home, your car and the road during your morning commute all come into play when it comes to cold weather safety, and it is important to err on the side of caution when it comes to handling cold weather conditions.

In Your Home

When the temperature drops, most people crank up the heat in their home to take away the chill. Be sure you’re using your heat properly and that your pipes are safe. It is a good idea to let your faucets drip just a little to assure that your pipes do not freeze or extra precaution is heat tracing which can be installed by an electrician.

If you are using a space heater, be extra cautious when deciding where to place it. Keep it a couple of feet away from things that can catch on fire such as clothing, bedding or rugs. That will not be covered by insurance if deemed that the homeowners was careless with equiptment.

Be sure to turn it off and unplug it when you are finished using it because according to NFPA and USFA, space heaters are the leading cause of fires during the cold winter months. Instead of the space heater, some use their stoves or ovens to keep their house warm. I would not consider this an option, especially if you have a gas stove. It can cause the people in the household to become ill with carbon monoxide poisoning and can also put those at serious risk for burns. If you still feel the winter chill when you’re inside, use that fireplace to help warm up a bit, but please read by blog post of fireplace safety. North Shore Contractor Management can assist with hiring a competent contractor to check your fire place and chimney.

Your Pets

Another thing to keep a close eye on in the home, is your loving pets! They also need extra protection during the winter months, just like their owners. If your pet is unable to live inside your home, be sure they have proper shelter that will keep them toasty while outside. This can include a barn, shed or a dog house that is warm enough for them to sleep in. It is a good idea to feed them more than the usual amount so they have enough fueling calories to keep themselves warm. Also make sure to refill your pets water bowl every so often since the water can freeze up from the cool air. Check out some other useful tips given by the Suffolk County SPCA on how to care for your furry friend during the winter.

Your Car

During the winter months, most let their vehicles heat up for a good amount of time before driving them. This should be a priority when the temperature dips this low since it can make it more difficult for your car to start. Plus, your car will run more efficiently once it has been heated up. If you have an older vehicle, it is a good idea to check the battery as well just to assure that the cold has not affected it. Falling temperatures can also cause your tire pressure to go down, so be sure to double check this before taking a long commute.

On the Road

Once the temps drop to 32 degrees and below, any water on the ground quickly turns to ice. Be alert while driving and be sure to pay attention for black ice and shiny spots on the road since we recently experienced snow that was melted from rainfall. It is also a good idea to be extra safe since others on the road may not have taken the safety measures that you have. Remember, an accident can be prevented if just one person was paying enough attention.

Taking the correct precautions can prevent threatening situations from occurring so make sure you utilize these tips this winter and the cold months years ahead. Share your knowledge with your loved ones to keep them from making a chilling mistake.
